Albert Road

Sawkings Architects were appointed to develop proposals for the redevelopment of an underutilised site at LRO Albert Road, Sutton.

The scheme delivers a contemporary new dwelling comprising two double bedrooms and a generous open-plan kitchen, living, and dining space. The design maximises the development potential of the site while maintaining a modest scale that respects neighbouring properties and minimises its visual impact on the surrounding context.

Planning consent was secured following a complex and extensive planning process, including a successful appeal, spanning more than 14 months. Throughout this period, Sawkings Architects worked closely with the client, providing strategic guidance and targeted support to navigate the challenges of the approval process.

The architectural approach combines contemporary design with a modern interpretation of traditional detailing, incorporating features such as herringbone brickwork and soldier courses. A carefully considered material palette creates a balanced contrast with the surrounding built environment, marking the transformation of a previously underused site into a high-quality contemporary home.

The project also adopts a modern method of construction through the use of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), offering enhanced energy performance, improved thermal efficiency, and significantly reduced construction times compared to traditional building methods.
